We have noticed an increasing number of patients reporting symptoms related to chronic stress. Above and beyond a patient’s typical problems we are noticing: Increased fatigue, insomnia, digestive problems, anxiety and depression.
Chronic Stress is a very real and debilitating condition. According to a study from 1998 in the New England Journal of Medicine by McEwen et al.
“Over time, allostatic load can accumulate, and the overexposure to neural, endocrine, and immune stress mediators can have adverse effects on various organ systems, leading to disease.”
Diseases that are directly linked to stress include: atherosclerosis, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, abdominal obesity, loss of mineralization of the bone, immunosuppression, and alteration in brain function, especially that of the prefrontal cortex which is our areas of executive functioning and decision making.
